Today I have two of the new NYX Chunky Dunk Hydrating Lippies for review.  Though NYX already has a line of Jumbo Lip Pencils, these Chunky Dunk Hydrating Lippies offer a new color balm formula for a sheer wash of color that moisturizes the lips.  Here is what NYX has to say: “Be Lippie Chic with this satiny smooth formula. Light and sheer at first, yet buildable the more you apply. Never needs a sharpener, the portable package propels and repels for ease of use and no product is wasted. A makeup bag must have!

I purchased the Chunky Dunks in Rum Punch and Hibiscus Tea Punch.  NYX Chunky Dunks are twist-up chunky pencils with a light balmy feel.  They are a similar size and packaging to the Revlon Balm Stains and several other chunky pencils in the drugstore.  NYX nailed the formula when it comes to comfort and moisture.  The Chunky Dunks are very lightweight on the lips, and don’t feel like you are wearing anything.  Even built-up and heavily layered, the formula stays lightweight.  At the same time, they are moisturizing like a good quality lip balm and extremely comfortable.  Unfortunately, that comfort comes at a cost.  The silky smooth formula is not sticky in the slightest, nor does it hug the lips, which means that there isn’t anything to make it stay.  I only get one to two hours of wear with the NYX Chunky Dunks, even less if I am drinking or talking a lot.  Luckily, the ease of the packaging makes it convenient to quickly re-apply throughout the day, but they are certainly not long-lasting.  The picture above is the Chunky Dunk in Rum Punch, and below is Hibiscus Tea Punch.

Color-wise, the Chunky Dunks are sheer but can be built up for decent pigmentation.  The amount of opacity will vary by shade, with some shades coming closer to looking opaque and some (usually the lighter shades) staying mostly sheer.  NYX Chunky Dunks are not as pigmented as the Revlon Balm Stains, though, so if pigmentation is what you are looking for, look elsewhere.  They do have a lovely shine that lasts longer than expected.  The first of the two shades that I purchased, Rum Punch, has good pigmentation that can be built up for a lot of color.  It will never be opaque, but it provides solid plum-berry color that is quite noticeable.  Hibiscus Tea Punch is a sheer nudish mauve, very close to my natural lip color.  Because it is such a light shade, it is very subtle on the lips but does provide some shine.  Here is a swatch of the two shades.

NYX Chunky Dunk Hydrating Lippie in Rum Punch is on the left, and Hibiscus Tea Punch is on the right.  This is a normal swatch, but you can build up the color on Rum Punch a little more than this.  As I said, the Chunky Dunks are on the sheer side.  I enjoy them, especially with how comfortable they are on the lips.  They feel very close to regular lip balm.  I also love that, unlike many NYX lip products, the Chunky Dunks have no noticeable smell or taste.  Yay!!!!  I do wish that the color lasted longer, but they are convenient and easy to carry around for touch ups.  If you like subtle lip color with pretty shine, and don’t mind having to re-apply throughout the day, the NYX Chunky Dunk Hydrating Lippies might be for you.  They are normally $6 each at Ulta and nyxcosmetics.com, but right now they are on sale at ulta.com for half off.  I definitely think that they are worth a look, especially at that price.

About beautyinbudgetblog

I am a self proclaimed eyeshadow junkie whose main hobbies include shopping, reading, singing, and mainlining caffeine while hanging out with my friends. I love interesting socks and have amassed quite a collection. The place that I want to visit before I die would be Greece. I like to read all seven Harry Potter books once a year the way some people read the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. (Sorry JRRT, but JKR kicks butt in my book.) I love art, and use my creativity in many different ways through painting, crafts, and makeup. I love to cook and try new things, and I especially love to eat. My favorite "date" is to go wine tasting, and do so with my husband once or twice a year. I love musical theater and think the world would be much better off if we all just watched more musicals. I am 100% a cat person and, although I think dogs can be really cute and sweet, they make me sneeze so cats will always rule. I love faeries and magic, mythology, theology, philosophy, and psychology. I regularly do logic puzzles and sometimes crosswords. I adore Bette Midler, Betty White, and Carol Burnett. I am not ashamed to admit that I watch Glee. I would like to start making some of my own clothes because I can't stop myself from buying fabric. I'm sure that there is much more, but I'm suddenly distracted by something shiny.
