Big Sales at Ulta

Ulta

Ulta

Ulta is going all full court press with the sales this week on drugstore items.  Free shipping, 40% off, and Buy 1 Get 1 sales are all happening through Saturday October 3rd.  (Omg, is it really October this week?  Where did September go?)  These sales are available in store and online.  If you plan it well, you can rack up some substantial savings.  And don’t forget that you can still use the $3.50 off of $10 coupons that Ulta always has as well as any manufacturers coupons that you may find.  So let’s take a look.

NYX Buy 2 Get 1

NYX Buy 2 Get 1

NYX is currently Buy 2 Get 1 Free.  Now would be a great time to try out the new Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks or the new Slide-On Lip Pencils.  If you really want to expand your eyeshadow collection, the new(ish) Avant Pop and Go-To Palettes are included in the sale.  I really like NYX, and I think that they especially excel at lip and cheek products.  If you haven’t tried NYX blushes or lippies, then you need to give them a shot.  Also in NYX news (taking a time-out from Ulta for a minute) the first ever NYX store is opening up this weekend.  If you happen to live in Southern California, the grand opening starts 10/2 at the Santa Anita Mall.  More store openings to follow soon in Rancho Cucamonga, Torrence, Santa Clara, and Walnut Creek. Now, back to Ulta.

40% off

40% off

Right now Revlon, Physicians Formula, and Almay cosmetics are 40% off.  I am definitely going to have to pick up another Revlon Nearly Naked Pressed Powder.  I ran out a while back and really miss it.  If you are a fan of Physicians Formula you will certainly want to take advantage of this sale.  Physicians Formula is rather pricey for drugstore, and 40% off is a great deal.  Remember Ulta accepts Manufacturer’s coupons and you can use them in conjunction with the Ulta coupon.

China Glaze

China Glaze

China Glaze polishes are Buy 1 Get 1 Free.  China Glaze polishes are $7.50 each, so that’s quite a savings.  I really like the China Glaze formula and recommend hopping on this deal.

BCRF

Also through 10/3, you will receive free shipping on all orders, when you add a $1 donation to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation to your cart.  There is no minimum required for the free shipping deal.  Once the donation is added to your cart, you will see that your shipping has changed to free.  There is also a link to donate more to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation if you would like.

It’s a good week to be an Ulta shopper.  Be sure to sign up for the Ulta rewards program if you haven’t already.  It is free to do so, and you earn points for any purchases made at Ulta that can be exchanged for cash toward an Ulta purchase.  I like to hoard my points and spend them on my birthday and during the Holidays.  It is a good way to bring the price down on those Holiday gifts and palettes that I always want.  There are also special coupons throughout the year for rewards members, and I think signing up for the program is absolutely worth it.  Do you plan on taking advantage of any of these sales this week?  Let me know in the comments below.

Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipstick Review and Swatches

Standard
Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipstick

Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipstick

Today I have two of the new Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipsticks to show you.  I don’t usually use Almay, and I am pretty sure that these are the first Almay Lip products that I have tried, but I love lip butters so I had to try them out.  The Butter Kiss Lipsticks launched for Spring 2015.  There are twelve shades in the line designed to coordinate with your skin tone.  What Almay means by this is that they have considered three different skin tones: Light, Light-Medium, and Medium (I guess anyone darker than Medium is SOL as far as Almay is concerned) and created corresponding Butter Kiss Lipsticks in four shade categories: Pink, Red, Nude, and Berry.  What they ended up with are twelve shades with names like Pink Light, Red Light-Medium, Berry Medium, and so on.  The system is pretty gimmicky in my opinion, and I doubt that people are actually sticking only to the shades recommended for their skin tones.  So, let’s ignore the “Smart Shade” aspect for now, and let’s focus on the product itself.

Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipstick

Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipstick

One thing that I love about the Butter Kiss Lipsticks is that they swivel all the way down into the tube so that there is no threat of nicking the lipstick with the cap.  (Don’t you HATE that?)  The packaging is pretty much identical in size and shape to the Revlon Lip Butters.  The only difference to the Revlon version is that the cap is clear and smooth on the Almay Butter Kiss Lipsticks and the tube color corresponds to the shade.  They have a sweet bakery kind of smell like vanilla or cookies.  It is wholly unnecessary, but not unpleasant.  I do not detect any sort of taste with the Butter Kiss Lipsticks.

As far as formula is concerned, I find the Almay Butter Kiss Lipsticks very similar to the Revlon Lip Butters.  They are just a tad bit more creamy than the Revlon Lip Butters, but not as creamy as the Maybelline Color Whispers, if that helps.  The Butter Kiss Lipsticks are a buttery, balmy type of lipstick.  They start out feeling pretty thick on your lips, but as they melt with your body heat, they thin out a bit and feel creamy and moisturizing.  They retain a certain amount of stickiness which helps the color last a little bit longer than similar products, but may not be the most pleasant experience for those who are sensitive to such things.  They are definitely not long-lasting, so be sure to keep the Butter Kiss Lipstick handy when you are out.  I can go about three hours before I need to re-apply, less if I am eating or drinking.

Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipstick in Berry Medium

The Butter Kiss Lipsticks have varying pigmentation with some shades landing more on the sheer side and others that are almost opaque.  I chose two of the darkest shades, Nude Medium and Berry Medium, because I don’t like the way I look in light lip colors.  Neither are actually dark.  Nude Medium has decent opacity, though your natural lip will show through a little bit.  It is a medium warm-toned nude shade that suits me very well.  I am a huge fan of shades like this, and I think that they flatter a wide variety of skin tones.  Berry Medium is more sheer.  It is a pink-toned berry color that looks very similar to my natural lip color, only brighter.  Again, it is a universal type shade that will flatter almost anyone, no matter what their skin tone may be.  Here is a swatch of the two shades, Nude Medium is on the left and Berry Medium is on the right.

While not exactly groundbreaking, the Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipsticks are very nice lip products, and I think most of you would really enjoy them.  I do want to take a moment, though, to talk about the limited shade selection.  I am frustrated and really bothered by Almay’s exclusive selection of “skin tones” for their Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipstick line.  It’s offensive that they didn’t include a Dark skin category.  And of course I know that women with dark skin can use the Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipsticks and may really enjoy some of the shades, but that’s not really the point, is it?  It is hard enough for African American women to find makeup that works for them without dealing with such deliberate exclusivity from a mainstream brand.  It is far past the time for all major brands to carry a variety of shades that work for all skin tones, from the fairest to the darkest.  It’s not like there isn’t a market for it.  Come on, Almay, wake up and welcome to 2015.

end rant.

Anyway, the Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipsticks have a nice  formula, though a bit sticky for my taste.  They are definitely worth a try, especially since Almay is still 40% off at Ulta through tomorrow.  My preference is still the Maybelline Color Whispers (also 40% off), but the Butter Kiss Lipsticks are a decent option.  They leave your lips soft and supple and are a good addition to the butter lipstick trend.

40% Off at Ulta All Week

Ulta 40% off

Ulta 40% off

Ulta is at it again with its 40% off sale this week.  Three or four times a year, Ulta offers 40% off on several drugstore brands.  This time around, the sale is good for all NYX, Revlon, Physicians Formula and Almay products.  The only exclusions I am aware of are NYX value sets over $14.99.  Otherwise, it is all good.  You have until Saturday, 10/4 to take advantage of the 40% off, both in-store and online (no code required).  What’s even better, is that you can still use Ulta’s regular $3.50 off of $10.00 coupon on your 40% of items, which is a substantial savings. I am trying really hard not to break my no-buy (so far so good), but it is getting harder and harder with all of the good deals that keep popping up.  (Especially with some of the new NYX products!!!)  So I will have to live vicariously through you.  Let me know in the comments below what you are planning to pick up during Ulta’s 40% off sale.

So, off to Ulta with you, and happy shopping!  🙂

40% off at Ulta

This is just a quick heads up to let you know that Ulta is having a 40% off sale on several drugstore brands.  All Maybelline, Revlon, Almay, Physicians Formula, and Jane Cosmetics are included in the sale.  It should be noted that NYX is not included in the sale this time around, although they have almost always been included in the past.  Jane Cosmetics has taken their place.  You have until Saturday, 4/19 to take advantage of the 40% off, both in-store and online (no code required).  What’s even better, is that you can still use Ulta’s regular $3.50 off of $10.00 coupon on your 40% of items, so that’s substantial savings.  I think that you may also be able to use manufacturer’s coupons as well, but don’t quote me on that.

So, off to Ulta with you, and happy shopping!

Spotted: New for Spring 2014

Standard

I’ve spotted some of the new displays for 2014 while out around town, so I snapped some pics to show you.  I meant to get these up earlier, but with the Holiday and my husband having the whole week off, I haven’t had much time to post to the blog.  There were several new display to see, so I’m going to split this post up into two, as not to overwhelm you with one giant list.  Let’s start with Revlon, Almay, and CoverGirl.

Revlon Age Defying CC Cream

Revlon Age Defying CC Cream

First up is Revlon Age Defying CC Cream.  I’m a little confused about American CC creams to be honest.  My best guess is that American CC creams fall somewhere in the middle of BB creams (tinted moisturizer)  and regular foundation in terms of pigment.  Of curse true Asian BB and CC creams are completely different, but let’s ignore that for now.  If you like a lighter foundation then you may want to check it out.  Anti-aging benefits are definitely nice to have.

Revlon Photoready Skinlights

Revlon Photoready Skinlights

Legend has it that many years ago, Revlon had a shimmering cream highlighter in a pump tube called Skinlights that was discontinued.  Well now, for 2014, Revlon is bringing it back.  The new Revlon Photoready Skinlights come in squeeze tubes of four shimmering shades.  I have no idea if the formula is the same as their previous incarnation, but if you are a fan of cream highlights (*cough- Benefit Highbeam -cough*) then you may want to take a look.

Revlon Cheek Boutique

Revlon Cheek Boutique

The Revlon Cheek Boutique is a collection of new Revlon blushes for Spring.  There are three new Highlighting palettes, seven (!!!) new powder blushes, and (though you can’t see it in this display) one new cream blush shade.  I haven’t used Revlon blushes myself, but I am excited to see such a large cheek collection with so many shades.  Unfortunately, they look really expensive, so be sure to keep an eye out for a sale.  Ulta often has Revlon buy one get one half off.  If you add in the $3.50 off of $10 coupon that is always available to print off their website you can save a good chunk and get the prices back down to reasonable.

AlmayColorWhipped

Almay Shadow Softies

Almay Shadow Softies are a fun and interesting product.  They are eyeshadows with an unusual texture.  They aren’t powder, cream, or mousse.  They are very similar to the Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blushes that came out a while back in that they smush down and mold like silly putty.  While they may be fun to play with, I’m a little hesitant to pick any up.  I liked the Bouncy Blushes, but I do remember there being issues with pigmentation in the lighter shades.  Also, I’m not sure that I’d like this texture on my eyes.  But, the Shadow Softies are definitely something different, and that’s always worth at least a look.

CoverGirl Spring 2014

CoverGirl Spring 2014

Some new CoverGirl products for Spring 2014 are the Tru Blend Fixstick Concealers and the Tru Magic line of products.  The Fixstick concealers look very similar to the L’Oreal True Match Super-Blendable Crayon Concealers sticks that came out in 2013.  They are twist-up chubby stick concealers.  I believe that they come in 5 or 6 shades.  An exciting product that is causing quite a buzz is the Tru Magic Skin Perfector.  The Tru Magic line includes the Skin Perfector, the Luminizer (to highlight), and the Sunkisser (to bronze).  While a cream highlighter and bronzer are nothing too innovative, the Skin Perfector is.  Think of it as a pressed silicone primer that is meant to prime or mattify in place of pressed powder.  There are similar products on the market from Smashbox and Mally, but none in the drugstore.  I don’t know how the Tru Magic Skin Perfector performs, but kudos to CoverGirl for working outside the box.

Do any of these new offerings or Spring look interesting to you?  have you tried any of these products already?  let me know in the comments below.  Next week I’ll bring you part two of this post with new products from Sally Hansen, Maybelline, L’Oreal, and Rimmel.  It’s that time of year.  The Spring collections are out and there is a lot to see.  There are a few specific items that I want to pick up over the next month or so, but I am going to be putting myself on a tight budget for most of 2014.  I’ve got some big plans and need to save.  It’s going to be tough with all of the tempting items popping up, though.  I can tell you that for sure.  What products are you looking forward to for Spring 2014?

Spotted: New for Summer 2013

Standard

I have been experiencing some technical difficulties with the blog this week, so things have been pretty slow around here.  I’m hoping that next week we can resume the regular schedule of 3-5 posts a week.  Thanks for bearing with me.  Today, I have some new offerings from L’Oreal, Rimmel, Almay, and Wet n Wild to show you.  I don’t even remember the last time I did a “Spotted” post to show you the new products out in the drugstore.  There are so many products out for summer release, and some that I am really looking forward to.  I haven’t seen them yet, but on the top of that list is the new Maybelline Fit Me Stick Foundation, the new Maybelline Color Tattoo Pure Pigments, and the new Wet n Wild Pop Color eyeshadow trios.  When I find them, I will definitely show them.  In the meantime, here are some new items that I did run across.

Lorealliquidpowder

L’Oreal Magic Nude Liquid Powder

L’Oreal Magic Nude Liquid Powder is L’Oreal’s new un-makeup makeup.  Say what?  Magic Nude Liquid Powder is a new lightweight liquid makeup that applies like a liquid foundation but sets like a mattifying powder and supposedly looks like skin.  I’m not sure what to think about this foundation, but my interest is definitely piqued.

Rimmelsummer2013

Rimmel Summer 2013

This is a large display of the Rimmel London Summer 2013 collection.  There are bronzers, LE Cocktail Color nail polishes, two different mascaras, and the much anticipated Show Off Lip Laquers.  The mascaras are the Rimmel Scandaleyes Curve Alert and the Rimmel Scandaleyes Show Off mascara.  This display from Walgreens has been pretty picked over in regards to the Show Off Lip laquers.  The picture below from Rite-Aid will give you a closer look at the shade selection.

Rimmelapacalips

Rimmel Show Off Lip Laquers

Rimmel Show Off Lip Laquers, known as Apocalips in the UK, are liquid lipsticks with incredible color pay-off.  They are extremely popular in Europe and will become part of Rimmel’s permanent line here in the States.  There are 14 shades in the US line.  There have been some complaints that there is no protective seal on these laquers to prevent tampering, but that’s not true at my Walgreens.  All of the Rimmel Show Off Lip Laquers had a protective seal, so no worries about buying them up.

Almayremover

New Almay Makeup Removers

From Almay, we have four new formulas of Makeup Remover.  This display is a little cleaned out, but as far as I can tell, the four formulas are : Soothing & De-Puffing, Oil-Free, Longwear & Waterproof, and Lash Care.  The removers come in dual action liquid form for the Oil-Free and the Longwear & Waterproof formulas, and makeup remover pads in all four formulas.

Almaylipbalm

Almay Color+Care Liquid Lip Balm

Also from Almay are the Color+Care Liquid Lip Balms.  Here is what Almay has to say: “A lifesaver for your lips! NEW Almay Color + Care Liquid Lip Balm combines the lip conditioning care of a balm with the shiny color of your favorite gloss. Shiny color drenches lips with 2X hydration as lip-loving conditioners provide 194% more moisture for softer, smoother lips over time. Non-sticky. gluten free. Hypoallergenic. Dermatologist tested.”  I guess as a cross between a balm and a gloss, these will be pretty sheer, but comfortable to wear.

CGeyerehabCC

CoverGirl + Olay Eye Rehab CC Cream

Next up is CoverGirl + Olay Eye Rehab CC Cream.  Honestly, what the hell is up with all these BB and CC creams?  Really, CC cream for the eyes?  CoverGirl and Olay have teamed up for some great products in the past, but this just looks gimmicky to me.  CoverGirl claims the product brightens, conceals and helps improve skin tone over time.  I am more than a little skeptical, but on the bright side, that pic of Ellen with the raccoon is adorbs.

WnWfergiesummer2013

WnW Fergie Summer 2013 Collection

Here is a large display of the new Wet n Wild Fergie Summer 2013 Collection.  The mascara, gel liners, eye primer, and shimmer palettes are all permanent.  There are two new Photo Op Eyeshadow Palettes, but I am a bit hesitant to get them because I was not a fan of the previously released palettes.  There are also two new shades of the Perfect Pout Lip Gloss.  Nail lovers will be pleased with several new nail polishes and some mini polish trios.

wnwfergiesummereye

WnW Fergie Summer 2013 Collection

Here is a close up of the new shadows and glosses.  I don’t know if the WnW Fergie Summer 2013 Collection Photo Op palettes are of better quality.  To see my review of the Photo Op palette in Desert Festival from the Center Stage collection click this link.  They are very pretty shades, but Wet n Wild has set a pretty high standard for itself when it comes to eyeshadow and so far, the Photo Op palettes haven’t measured up.

wnwpartyroof

WnW Party on the Roof Collection

Good new if you missed the Wet N Wild Coloricon Baked Eyeshadow Palettes from Holiday 2011.  The new WnW Party on the Roof Collection gives you a second chance to snag them.  Check out this post for swatches of the holiday palettes.  This time, the palettes come with a mascara instead of an eyeliner in this collection.  Also part of Party on the Roof, are trios with a Megalast polish, Megasheild lip color and a clear gloss.  All of the sets are $4.99.

That’s it for now, but I am definitely on the look out for more new collections to start popping up in my local area.  What about you?  What new releases are you looking forward to?  Let me know in the comments below.
