September 2012 Monthly Favorites

It’s the first week of October, which means it is time for my monthly favorites of September.  These are the products that I especially enjoyed, and found myself reaching for over and over again during the course of the month.  To see what my non-beauty favorites were for the month, click on over to my other blog, Defies Description.

Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Cleansing Pads

A rediscovered favorite of mine is the Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Cleansing Pads.  I used to use these all of the time, but had gotten away from them while I was using other cleansers.  I started to use them again in September and couldn’t understand why I stopped in the first place.  They are quick and easy to use, and leave my skin clean and exfoliated, without over drying.  I have a full review of them here, so check it.

Black Radiance Urban Jungle

I have been loving this 8-pan palette from Black Radiance.  Urban Jungle is a gorgeous mix of greens and browns, shades which we’ve already established to be by weakness.  Black Radiance is made by the same company that makes Wet n Wild, so these shadows are just as fabulous as the WnW 8-pan palettes that we all know and love.  I actually want to do a more in-depth review on Urban Jungle with some compare/contrast swatches to WnW Comfort Zone, so I won’t say too much more here.  Urban Jungle is versatile, and has been perfect to transition into fall.

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara is my favorite, Holy Grail mascara.  I have sad, wimpy lashes, and Lights, Camera, Lashes makes them look like they have some life to them.  I do not like paying full price for it, though.  Luckily Ulta had Lights, Camera, Lashes as one of the 21 Days of Beauty specials, so I was able to pick it up for only $10.  I can’t say enough good things about this mascara.  With the holidays coming, Tarte may have some value kits coming out that include this mascara, and if they do, you should totally pick Lights, Camera, Lashes up to try it out.

(L)Revlon Lip Butter in Pink Truffle (R)Revlon Balm Stain in Romantic

My go-to lip all month has been one of two shades, both from Revlon.  The first is the Revlon Lip Butter in Pink Truffle, which is a deep brownish pink neutral.  This is a shade that looks fantastic with my skin, and goes with everything.  The other product I’ve been using is Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Romantic, which is a sheer tomato red.  The Balm Stains can be built up for major impact, but I’ve been liking Romantic on the lighter side like my swatch below.

(L) Pink Truffle (R) Romantic

I have reviewed both the Lip Butters and the Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains, so be sure to check them out here and here for more info.  I love warm-toned brown and red-ish lips for Fall.  I know that berries and purples are in, but I feel those are more winter shades.  Pink Truffle and Romantic are perfect for me right now.

NYX Slide On… Pencil in Brown Perfection

NYX Slide On Pencil Eyeliner in Brown Perfection has been my go-to eyeliner all month long.  I have an in-depth review with swatches of the four shades I own here, so be sure to read my rave.  In short, this is one of NYX’s best products, in my opinion, and they are as good as $20+ eyeliners.  Brown Perfection is a deep dark brown.  I prefer brown liner to black when I’m wearing warm eye looks.  The brown softens the look and makes it more natural.  If you haven’t tried NYX Slide On Pencil Eyeliners yet, go do it.  Do it now.  Trust me, it’s worth it.

That is it for my favorites for September.  I hope that you saw something that you liked.  I hope that you check out my non-beauty favs over at defiesdescription.wordpress.com as well.  What about you, what were your favorites for September?  Let me know in the comments below.

Skincare Routine

Standard

I don’t know about you, but I am always interested in what other people do for their skincare routine.  I have not been blessed with clear, alabaster skin.  My skin has so many issues, it needs therapy.  If I go without makeup, I am not a pretty, pretty princess.  So I am very interested in what products other people use to combat their own skin issues.  That being the case, I thought that I would share my skincare routine with you.  Keep in mind that my skin is very dry, slightly sensitive, and I have mild rosacea, so these products are geared for those issues.  If you have oily skin, these products may not be the best option for you.

I start with Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes to take off my makeup.  I have tried Ponds brand towelettes and prefer Neutrogena because they remove my makeup without stripping my skin.  When I used the Ponds wipes, my skin felt leached of all moisture.  The Neutrogena formula feels slightly oily (not the bad kind), as if I were removing my makeup the old fashioned way with night cream.  Because I follow this step with cleanser, I don’t fear the oils.  My skin certainly appreciates the more moisturizing Neutrogena wipes over the Ponds brand.  Added bonus:  I get them at BJ’s (it’s a Costco-type store) for dirt cheap.

Next comes  cleanser.  When I don’t feel the need to seriously exfoliate my skin, I use Olay Regenerist Advanced Anti-Aging Regenerating Cream Cleanser.  Cream cleansers are best for dry skin, while gel cleansers work well for oily skin.  This cleanser has teeny tiny micro beads, so there is a little bit of exfoliation, but not much.  It’s super gentle, and again, does not strip my skin of moisture, but still gives me a clean feeling.  Again, I can get a club pack of these at BJ’s, so it is also a cost-effective choice.

When I want to step up the exfoliation, I turn to Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Cleansing Pads, which I reviewed here.  I pretty much said it all in the review, so be sure to check it out.  I really love how quick and easy the pads are to use, and they really work well.  It still kind of amazes me that those tiny bumps can get the job done so well, but they do.  I use Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Cleansing Pads about three times a week.  If my skin wasn’t so sensitive, I would use them more, but it can’t handle manual exfoliation more than that.  Which brings me to my next product.

After my face is cleansed, I use Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control 3-in-1 Hydrating Acne Treatment.  I didn’t pick it up as an acne treatment so much as a chemical exfoliant.  Most of my acne issues are hormonal.  I was looking at Paula’s Choice Beta Hydroxy Acid exfoliant, but it’s kind of pricey.  Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control 3-in-1 Hydrating Acne Treatment was recommended to me as a cheaper alternative.  Those with dry skin, don’t be scared off by the name of this product.  The Neutrogena Treatment contains 2% salicylic acid, and is a good BHA lotion for all skin types.  It has actually helped a lot with my Rosacea redness, which is awesome.  It definitely has moisturizing ingredients, and those with oily skin may not even need to add a light moisturizer on top of it.  My dry skin needs more help, though.

I use Olay Regenerist Regenerating Serum (Fragrance Free)to lock in moisture and help heal my skin discoloration.  This is a fairly new product for me.  I’ve only been using it for about a month, give or take, but I like it so far.  It’s a silicone-based serum that leaves my skin feeling velvety soft.  I do not understand the science behind the ingredients, but I believe the big winners are niacinamide and peptide for healing and restorative properties.  I have been impressed with the Olay Regenerist line, in general, and though I haven’t formed a solid opinion on the Regenerating Serum, at this point I’m positive on it.  It certainly feels great, though I don’t really expect it to preform miracles.  This is another item that I can find at my local warehouse store.

My last step is to use Olay Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum.  Some people say that eye serum is not necessary.  If you are using the proper moisturizer on your face, you should be able to use it on your eyes too.  I actually agree with that sentiment for most skin types.  However, because  of my skin issues, I sometimes get dry patches on my eyelids.  I really need the extra moisture.  Since I’ve been using the Eye Lifting Serum (sixth months or so), I have not had any problems with dry patches and the crinkles around my eyes are less noticeable, so this is a Holy Grail product for me now.  I will absolutely repurchase again and again.  This is another item that I can pick up at BJ’s.

I seriously recommend checking out your local warehouse store to see what makeup and skincare items they carry.  You may be surprised.  Not only are several items on this list found at my local warehouse store, but I also found my current favorite mascara Cover Girl Lashblast, in a club pack.  It can’t hurt to check, especially if you already buy your groceries there.

I hope that you found this interesting, and maybe you found a new product or two to try out next time you go shopping.  All of these items are available in drug stores, as well as Target and Walmart.

Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Cleansing Pads

Standard

Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Cleansing Pads

I’ve been using Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Cleansing Pads for about a month or two now, and I really like them a lot. According to Aveeno’s website: “These dual-textured cleansing pads, moistened with foaming skin-conditioning cleansers and natural Soy, help even out skin tone and texture for brighter, naturally radiant skin. The pad is smooth on one side to lift away dirt, oil and makeup and textured on the other side to gently exfoliate and smooth away dry patches. Oil-free, soap-free, noncomedogenic and hypoallergenic, these pads are gentle enough for everyday use, even on sensitive skin.” I used to use a strong facial scrub to exfoliate, but have gotten away from that since realizing how harmful abrasive scrubs can be for skin. I have dry skin with mild Rosacea, and the scrubs made my Rosacea way worse. Dry skin, however, likes to cling to dead skin cells like they are clutching a life preserver, so I couldn’t go without exfoliating. I’ve been experimenting with chemical exfoliants, but I still like to use something extra to make sure that I’m really getting rid of dead skin and impurities. Enter Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Cleansing Pads. The textured side is perfect to mildly exfoliate without causing the micro-tears on my skin that harsh abrasive scrubs cause. My skin feels fresh and clean, without stinging or turning red.

I personally like to remove my makeup before using Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Cleansing Pads, though you can use the pads alone. I like the extra step because I can still be super gentle with my skin while making absolutely sure that it’s getting super clean. They are very easy to use, just wet your face and gently scrub in a circular motion to help the pad lather up. I find that there is plenty of product on the pads to foam up really nicely and cover my entire face. I find that regular cleansers can sometimes be messy, but it can’t get any more simple than these self-foaming pads. The smooth side is gentle and I have no issue running it over my delicate eye area. The textured side, as I said, is perfect for mild exfoliation. I doesn’t look like it would do the trick because the bumps are really small, but you can feel it working on your face. It does have a strong fragrance that smells herbal, but I do not find it overpowering. It just smells natural and clean. It has a horrible taste if you accidentally get it in your mouth, so watch out for that because it’s truly terrible.

Although Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Cleansing Pads can be used daily, I only use them two or three times a week. My skin can’t handle daily manual exfoliation, but that’s because of my sensitivity issues. I agree with Aveeno’s claim that the pads are gentle enough for sensitive skin. I’ve had no issues with bad reactions to this product and I don’t feel that tight feeling on my skin like it’s been stripped bare like some cleansers cause. Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Cleansing Pads leave my skin feeling clean and healthy. You can find this product wherever Aveeno products are sold (Target, Walmart, Walgreens, etc.). It retails for around $7-$8. I definitely think that Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Cleansing Pads are worth a try.
