This is part 2 of the battle of the boxes/bags for the month of November. I received my Ipsy (formerly My Glam) bag on Monday. For those who missed my post last month, Ipsy is a subscription service that is similar to Birchbox, except that each month’s products come in a different makeup bag instead of a box. The main difference is that Ipsy does not have a loyalty program like Birchbox does where you earn points to buy stuff in the shop. Ipsy doesn’t have a shop. Instead, they link to the product’s company website so you can buy through the company directly. Also, Ipsy is mostly concentrated on cosmetics. Though there will be some skincare and haircare samples, the majority of the bag will contain cosmetic samples. Ipsy does not send an informational card like Birchbox does, so my breakdowns will be a little different (all quotes come from Ipsy).
This month’s theme was “You’re Invited”. “The season of soirees begin now so this month it is all about getting “Party Perfect!” with your November Glam Bag. Products that you will love for pre-party prep to after party fun. Dance the night away without a doubt that you look like the bell of any ball.” Here is what I got in my bag
Nailtini Nail Lacquer in Millionaire: “Introducing Millionaire nail lacquer from the new Nailtini “Speakeasy” Collection chosen specifically for the ipsy community. Millionaire spikes a base of rose gold micro-glitter with iridescent gold and teal tinsels for statement-making nails, whether worn alone or as a dazzling special-effect topcoat. The only line of lacquer developed to maximize the creativity of the user by “cocktailing” different shades, Nailtini serves up endless color possibilities with amazing performance, hip sensibility and tongue-in-cheek attitude. Always 3-free, made in the USA and never tested on animals“. I received a full sized product (15 ml), worth $13.00 at tinibeauty.com
Chella Defining Eyebrow Gel: “This clear colored brow gel lifts and holds eyebrow hairs and grooms them into place. The application tool helps remove the guesswork“. Normally $18.00 for .19 oz at chella.com, my .12 oz sample is worth $11.37.
Starlet Cosmetics Eye Pencil in “All I want is peace, love and chocolate“: “These creamy eyeliner pencils glide on to deliver a lasting vibrant color in chocolate or black. Blend or line your lids to create your favorite glam look, whether a smoky eye or straight line wing tip“. This is also a full-sized item, worth $11.00.
BareMinerals Marvelous Moxie Lipgloss: “Unleash your inner moxie with a fabulously full, pillowy pout. The luscious marvelous Moxie lipgloss delivers vibrant sheer-to-medium color with a glistening mirror-like finish. Infused with natural ingredients, exotic oils, botanical extracts and antioxidants, the refreshing formula smoothes and hydrates lips for exceptional comfort without any stickiness or tackiness. All the while, an encapsulated vitamin A, C and E complex delivers strong antioxidant defense against environmental stressors, so you’re ready for anything—and everything“. BareMinerals offers a .15 fl oz tube of gloss for $18.00. My .07 fl oz sample is worth $8.40
TheBalm Meet Matte(e) Eyeshadow in Matt Batali: “Matt Batali is just one of the nine shadows found in theBalm’s Meet Matte(e) compact palette (named after their favorite Matthews next door) which can be combined to create a multitude of soft and wearable looks. Matt Batali leaves a dark, matte finish, perfect for creating a smokey eye.” Though these shadows aren’t sold individually, the Meet Matt(e) palette of 9 shadows (.33 oz) is listed at $34.50 on theBalm’s website. My .03 oz sample shadow is worth $3.14.
The grand total worth of my November Ipsy (My Glam) bag is $46.91, well over my $10 subscription fee. Ipsy has promo codes for discounts off the products with their affiliates. This card shows all the special offers for November’s items. (Click to enlarge so you can read the card.)
In general, I like the items that I received this month. The BareMinerals Moxie gloss is a really pretty sheer berry shade that I will definitely wear. I’ll also definitely get use out of the Matt Batali eyeshadow. Millionaire is a very pretty polish, and will look great for New Year’s bling. I’m less excited about the other two items, but they are nice, and I’ll probably use them at some point. The bag is much more generic this month and looks a little cheap, but it is still nice to have something I can use instead of a disposable conatiner. Comparing Birchbox to Ipsy, I’m going to say that Ipsy wins again, though it was a closer match this time. The overall value of the Ipsy bag is a little more than Birchbox, and I like the samples in the bag more than I liked my Birchbox samples this month, including two full sized samples. So, that is two months in a row that Ipsy wins over Birchbox when directly compared. I am looking forward to December’s samples from both services, and hope that they throw in something special in honor of the holiday.
